Solar Food DehydratorsDuring my time as a graduate research assistant at ASU I was the project manager in charge of researching, designing, and building solar thermal food dehydrators that served as a dump load for our evacuated tube collectors during the summer. We built two systems, one passive and active, and the other strictly active. These systems were installed at two local organic and bio dynamic farms in western North Carolina. The farmers use these dehydrators in the summer when the heat from the solar thermal system is not needed to heat the greenhouse. They have been used to dry a variety of fruits, vegetables, and herbs including tomatoes, bananas, strawberries, apples, cantaloupes, zucchini, squash, basil, and oregano.
